A fortress within a fortress, Carcassonne Castle is the mother of all castles. It does not get any better or more grandeur. Two fortified walls, with 52 towers and barbicans. As you approach the city of Carcassonne, the fortress appears like jumping out of a fairytale from faraway skies. It is said that it inspired some of Disney's structures. Massive and endless, makes you think you are so petite.
Carcassonne Castle changed hands a few times, so that it ended up in the hands of the king of France who restored it and gave it today’s glory. Barbicans, Gauls, Romans, Visigoths, Saracens and Franks, a history of 2500 years breathing down your neck. There are no words to easily describe what it feels like to be inside so much history. Through wartimes and peace times, from life to death, good and bad times, the castle was built, destroyed, and then rebuilt stronger. So strong that the city’s enemies would just avoid messing with the people of Carcassonne...
