A lot of people don't get it. They don't understand why so many people would be interested in photographing and seeing Manneken Pis, the small bronze statue of a boy peeing. That said, there is some history behind it including many stories of how he came to become a symbol of the city's independence.
Manneken Pis was created in the 17th century by J. Duquesnoy and still crowns a small corner fountain near Brussels' historic square. He was stolen and vandalized a few times but he was fixed up and attracts tourists like a magnet. If you want to see more, there is his little sister and dog, both peeing in other parts of the city.
You can catch him in nude or dressed up in costumes, promoting whatever the city organizers think is appropriate. Dressing it up started in 1698 though, so it is not a new trick.
