The well preserved medieval miniature village of Yvoire, strategically positioned on Lake Geneva, welcomes tourists from around the world. Most of its houses are commercial properties now, restaurants, art and souvenir shops etc, though commanding high prices over this highly touristic attraction. Unfortunately, during the winter most of them are closed.
Although Yvoire is famous for winning some battles in the 13th century, it was almost completely destroyed later on as a victim of the Bernese ruling. So it slowly settled to being a village of farmers and fishermen. These days it is flourishing back to its former glory, as Yvoire is a member of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. The reminders of its past are evident if you take a look at the castle, the ramparts, the fortified gateways, the ditches and the little houses...
