The Danish sandwich: Smørrebrød
Smørrebrøds Copenhagen

Even though, you expect to see different sandwiches with one or more types of food placed on or between the bread, they do generally consist of two or more slices of bread and often come in different shapes, forms and styles. But sandwiches in Copenhagen - Denmark are the exception to the rule. The Danish sandwiches look quite different compared to the traditional image of Western sandwiches.

Smørrebrøds, as they call them, which literally mean butter and bread, are served with only one slice of bread, which is used at the bottom as a bed base.

They are open faced sandwiches with one slice of buttered rye bread, topped with various cold food items (seafood or meat) and some fresh greens.

Such items include smoked salmon, herring, eel, shrimp, fish roe egg and roast meats. Although fish in sandwiches may seem a little strange, the way it is presented, is very appealing and tastes delicious. Needless to say, that the fish and the rye make this a very healthy meal.

No wonder why the Danish are so fit and happy as a nation. They get their proteins and fibre from a single sandwich.

If you are planning on visiting Copenhagen and would be interested in trying Smørrebrøds, Orangeriet is the place to go and try them.

Amongst other interesting food combinations, Smørrebrøds are also served with beef tartar topped with an egg.
