Saint-Emilion is filled with vineyards and is considered a key wine area. Its wines have one of the most prolific appellations in France.
The grapes used are mostly Merlot and Cabernet Franc and very little Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Keep in mind that the affordable Grand Cru classe of Saint-Emilion is considered of lower quality compared to the Medoc wines.
Start from the Tourist Office in Bordeaux and get some info for wineries and tours. For a small fee, they will book your tours in advance. Then you can take bus tours or use your car to locate the wineries. Do plan ahead for bus tours though.
